ESSENTIAL NAVIGATION AND SEAMANSHIP COURSE

A basic introduction to navigation and safety for anyone new to boating.

Ideal for sailors, powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and boatmasters.

Also useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.

DURATION: 2 DAYS

Minimum duration: 16 hours in the classroom or approximately 8-10 hours online

RYA DAY SKIPPER THEORY 

5 days or 3 weekends. 

A comprehensive introduction to chartwork navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship ideal for inexperienced skippers.

RYA Day Skipper Theory course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. 

A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising. 

Invaluable for learning how to start making decisions on board and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course.

This course is taught over 5 days with two exam papers, 

it can be covered through a series of evening classes, weekend sessions or as a week-long course.

RYA COASTAL SKIPPER /YACHTMASTER COASTA

This course provides advanced training for more experienced skippers.

The course equips you to navigate on coastal and offshore passages.

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

Please note, you must already have your RYA Day Skipper Theory certificate, or equivalent knowledge, before attending this course.

DURATION: 6 DAYS

PRICE: £400

Required experience: Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper Shore-based.

Minimum duration: 40 hours plus exam time

YACHTMASTER OCEAN THEORY COURSE

A course in celestial navigation, worldwide meteorology and passage planning, which also unravels the mysteries of the sextant.

DURATION: 5 DAYS

Required experience: Navigation to Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shore-based standard.

Minimum duration: 40 hours plus exam time

RYA RADAR COURSE

The aim of this course is to teach students the use of small boat Radar to assist decision-making in navigation, pilotage and collision avoidance.

DURATION: 1 DAY

    • Adjusting brilliance, contrast, gain, range and tuning
  • Refining the picture.
    • Adjust the sea clutter and rain clutter controls to suit prevailing conditions

  • Understanding the picture
    • The factors affecting the clarity of the visual image
  • Radar reflectors
    • Understanding what affects the received image
    • Types of reflectors
  • Position fixing with radar
    • Use of VRM and EBL
    • Plotting the vessel’s position using radar.
  • Pilotage by radar
    • How to prepare a simple pilotage plan including use of clearing ranges
    • Execution of a blind pilotage using radar
  • Collision avoidance
    • How to determine the risk of collision with another vessel: CPA, course and speed
    • The existence of automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA & MARPA)
